Big Orange Music rented a standard office space to use as a sound and music recording studio. Big Orange are composers of music and sound designers doing interactive and drama projects. It is difficult to make a sound tight studio in an office building, we had to use thick insulation and cut everything loos from the building to avoid contact sounds. Because a studio is an alien object in this building we decided to make it spacey element to contrast the rough concrete finish of the walls and ceilings. We were one of the first to make use of special plaster elements that are now sold via Flos as ‘soft architecture’ to create the 3d round windows. The shape of the floor plan was created because of the acoustic requirements, no corner could be at 90 degrees. The walls are very thick and finished on the inside with a specially hand made cloth panels because the sound has to travel though it freely. The second main object in the space we call the ‘caravan’. It is a relatively inexpensive but expressive way to make a studio free from floor and walls. The insulation requirements were a lot less strict then the large studio. We also wanted to to contrast the spacey skin of the large studio by using simple, warm materials. By putting it loos in the space it feels temporary and takes up visually less space. Inside we made it all one colour but using different materials due to the strict acoustic requirements, the result was to make it feel like a space within a space. Using furniture and lighting from some of the super brands we sell like Diesel and Bulo we were able to finish the spaces in a characteristic style. We wanted a total composition that you would not expert to find in an office building so that people would be surprised when they arrived and be put in a different mood. Making music takes a special state of mind and we made a space that would help put you in the mood. Big Orange is a unique company and now they have an unique studio.
